Differences between the two types of LED light strips

Simply put, the core difference between front-Emitting and side-Emitting LED strips lies in the mounting position of LEDs and light transmission paths, which directly determine their brightness, lighting performance and applicable scenarios.

Top-Emitting LED Strips

LED chips of Top-Emitting strips are vertically soldered onto the PCB board, emitting light upward vertically from the strip surface with zero refraction in the light path for direct light output. Analogous to sunlight, its light is direct, high-luminous and strong in penetration. Top-Emitting LED strips feature high luminous efficiency and sufficient brightness. Compatible with aluminum profiles or light channels, they deliver even, bright illumination for worktops, cabinet undersides, bookshelf partitions and other areas. When high illuminance or task lighting is required, top-Emitting LED strips are generally the optimal option.

Side-Emitting LED Strips

In contrast, side-Emitting LED strips adopt horizontally mounted SMD LEDs. Light travels parallel to the circuit board and radiates horizontally from the strip’s side edge, then diffuses evenly through silicone or light guide layers. Emitting light sideways, this type easily creates continuous and soft linear lighting effects, making it perfect for curved, irregular and ultra-thin mounting structures. Widely applied to cabinet edges, shelf outlines, decorative moldings and ambient lighting, it effectively suppresses glare and upgrades the overall design texture of furniture.
